Asteroid impact

Several kilometers in size, the asteroid was thankfully porous in texture, saving the planet from a much more devastating impact.

  • Impact Velocity: 45.00 km per second ( = 27.90 miles per second )
  • Impact Angle: ~50 degrees

The resulting crater, for now referred to as the Manitoba Impact Site, immediately after the impact measured a staggering 67 km in diameter and nearly 24 km in depth. Seismic activity caused by the impact caused considerable sedimentary rock and permafrost collapse into the crater, though, and the final result, as measured by the United States Geological Survey, was 116 km in diameter and 1.24 km in depth.

The effect on the landscape and peoples of the area was terrible and immediate. Those closest to the impact suffered the most and were the first to be killed, but the results of the impact were farther reaching, and the resulting earthquake (measuring a 9.9 on the Richter Scale) and air blast ensured the doom of Manitobans not killed by the initial blast.

Blast Effects:

  • Everyone within 820 miles receives 1st degree burns over all exposed areas of the body.
  • Within 800 miles, second degree burns replace 1st degree, deciduous tree ignite.
  • Within 780 miles, third degree burns replace 2nd degree, grass and paper ignite as well.
  • Within 750 miles, plywood structures ignite.
  • Within 700 miles, clothing ignites.

Seismic Effects:

  • Within 700 miles, the tremors are be felt by everyone. Unstable object overturned, pendulum clocks stop.
  • Within 450 miles, heavy furniture moved, walls crack, poorly built structures suffer greatly.
  • Within 350 miles, all buildings suffer great damage /w partial collapse. Monuments and freestanding walls crumble.
  • Within 200 miles, most masonry and frame structures destroyed with their foundations. Well-built wooden structures and bridges destroyed. Serious damage to dams, dikes, embankments. Large landslides. Sand and mud shifted horizontally on beaches and flat land. Rails bent. Underground pipelines destroyed.

Air Blast Effects:

  • All glass within 5310 km shatters.
  • 90% of all trees up to 2090 km from the impact site blown down.
  • All wood-framed buildings within 2000 km suffer near, if no complete, collapse.
  • All multi-story, wall-bearing buildings within 1600 km suffer near, if not complete, collapse.
  • All highway overpass bridges within 1100 km completely collapse.
  • Within 500 km, multi-story steel-framed buildings distort and collapse, cars and trucks overturned and distorted to uselessness.

Climate Effects:

The debris thrown into the atmosphere has partially blocked the Sun and has had a few drastic effects on the world’s climate.

  • Average temperatures have dropped ~10F around the world.
  • 40% of all sunlight reaching Earth is blocked by the cloud of debris, giving the effect of a perpetually overcast sky.
  • Plant growth has suffered greatly, and the year’s crop yield has been abysmal.
